Today there are many requirements for driving a vehicle in any specific state. Louisiana auto insurance is not different. If you are planning to register your vehicle in this state, you will need to be certain that you have the proper amount of coverage in order to do so. In just about every state, there are minimums set for the amount of coverage that you must carry.

For drivers in this state, the requirements for the coverage that they must have is $10,000 for one person and a maximum limit of $20,000 per incident and a $10,000 property damage coverage as well. Like all other states, this means that in each accident, the person in the other vehicle can receive up to $10,000 in payment from your carrier for medical care.

When you insure your vehicle with the minimum coverage that is required, you should understand that the coverage you are buying does not cover you or your vehicle. In addition, in certain states if you are found to be at fault for the accident, the victims who are injured can bring a court case against you if their medical expenses are more than the coverage that you have purchased. In some cases, they will agree to the amount offered by your policy underwriter. However, in other cases they will not.

As you work to make a decision regarding the coverage you wish to purchase, you will find that most of the time the agents will recommend you purchase a higher amount of coverage that is required by law. However, if you are struggling with your finances, you will likely want to use just the minimum amount until you are back on your feet. The higher the limits that you purchase, the more they will cost.

Obviously, the more coverage you carry, the less likelihood that you will be sued for more money. However, for those in a situation where they are already financially struggling, this may not be an opinion. In addition, many times it is important to realize that agents are also trying to make money. They will try to convince you to buy more coverage as a way to help themselves improve their own earnings.

As you look through the various options that are available today, you will find that there are separate line items that will allow you to determine the required coverage and anything that may be optional. As you read over the various options that you might be interested in, you will want to pay special attention to the cost that it is adding to the policy. For example, today many cell phone companies offer a roadside assistance program when you purchase your contract for your mobile service. Vehicle coverage is extended beyond the vehicle that you own. Rather it is controlled by where your phone is.

If you are driving a vehicle that belongs to someone else or you are a passenger in another vehicle, as long as you have your cell phone with you, access to roadside assistance is only a phone call away. However, if you carry this coverage on your vehicle, it is not transferable to another vehicle that you might be driving or are a passenger in. Additionally, the coverage on your phone tends to be less expensive than the coverage offered on a vehicle policy.

The requirements for Louisiana auto insurance are not unlike the requirements for other states. Some states allow drivers to use a bonding option instead of carrying coverage on specific vehicles. However, the amounts that are required tend to be quite high and the cash is held by the Department of Transportation for as long as you continue to maintain the registration on that vehicle.
